To sail away to half discovered places,

To see the secrets so few eyes have seen,

To see moments of enchantment on our faces,

The moments when we smile and those between.

«Are you talking about Nubia now?»

«Yes.

In a way.»

If I could leave this place then I’d go sailing.

To corners of my land where there would be,

Sweet southern winds of liberty prevailing,

a beauty so majextic and so free.

«I would take you sailing.

South.

You could be my guide.»

There’d be no ties of time and space to bind me.

And no horizon I could not pursue.

I’d leave the worlds misfortunes far behind me.

I’d put my faith and trust in something new.

But why should I tell you this.

A stranger I’ve just met.

A woman who I hardly know at all and should forget.

A journey we can only dream of.

Enchantment passing through,

and how it is I say these things

So easily to you.

«I'll never take you sailing!

I’m never going to leave Egypt again!»

«You talk as though you’ve been enslaved.

If you don’t like your fate, change it!

You are your own master, there are no shackles on you!

So don’t expect any pity or understanding from this humble palace slave.»

And why did I tell her this?!

A stranger I’ve just met.

A woman who I hardly know and will forget!

Anonymous and gone tomorrow,

Enchantment passing through

And all I’ve done is tell her things

She already knew.

Per veleggiare verso luoghi scoperti per metà,

Per vedere i segreti che così pochi occhi hanno visto,

Per vedere i momenti di incanto sui nostri volti,

I momenti in cui sorridiamo e quelli in mezzo.

«Parli di Nubia adesso?»

"Sì.

In un modo."

Se potessi lasciare questo posto, andrei in barca a vela.

Agli angoli della mia terra dove ci sarebbe,

Dolci venti meridionali di libertà che prevalgono,

una bellezza così maestosa e così libera.

«Ti porterei in barca a vela.

Sud.

Potresti essere la mia guida.»

Non ci sarebbero legami di tempo e spazio a legarmi.

E nessun orizzonte che non potrei perseguire.

Lascerei le disgrazie del mondo molto dietro di me.

Metterei la mia fede e fiducia in qualcosa di nuovo.

Ma perché dovrei dirtelo.

Uno sconosciuto che ho appena incontrato.

Una donna che conosco a malapena e che dovrei dimenticare.

Un viaggio che possiamo solo sognare.

Incantesimo che passa,

e com'è che dico queste cose

Così facilmente a te.

«Non ti porterò mai in barca a vela!

Non lascerò mai più l'Egitto!»

«Parli come se fossi stato ridotto in schiavitù.

Se non ti piace il tuo destino, cambialo!

Sei il padrone di te stesso, non ci sono catene su di te!

Quindi non aspettarti pietà o comprensione da questo umile schiavo di palazzo.»

E perché le ho detto questo?!

Uno sconosciuto che ho appena incontrato.

Una donna che difficilmente conosco e dimenticherò!
