July 4th, 1981

Candles of a Roman ilk

Unloaded from a Chevy truck

Into the home her folks had built

Patio was charcoals and extended fam in folding chairs

Safely arced around the yard to focus on the smoking flares

Couple cousins, uncles, aunts

Mostly grown-ups, couple brats

Baby Ruby’s only two, she’s too close to the jumping jacks

Mommy scoops her to the house, buckles up the booster seat

Rolls her to the storm door, let her long for all the lunacy

Telephone distracting Mom, Ruby wriggles out her strap

Fingers push the plexiglass, she’s off into the sour patch

Past the pyrotechnics, undetected and invisible

Woke the sleeping beagle skipping toward the kidney swimming pool

Off into the yawning blue, the splash would mum the rocket-ships

Ruby’s lungs were filling by the time her kin were cognizant

Many sprung and sprinted down, all arrive belated but

The beast she had earlier stirred had been alert since waking up

Canine let his gainer fly, water-top commotion grow

Howling guests assume the cloven hooves had come to do-si-do

Frenzied and congested deck, part to let the others see

Soggy beagle gently dragging Ruby in his yellow teeth

Laid the tiny body in the sun before her father‘s feet

When she choked the liquid through her bluish lips he dropped his knee

Help the air to reconvene, towel his shaking Ruby off

EMT confirm the save, everybody say «good dog!»

Scaricato da un camion Chevy

Nella casa che i suoi avevano costruito

Patio era carboncino e famiglia estesa su sedie pieghevoli

Girati in sicurezza intorno al cortile per concentrarti sui bagliori fumanti

Coppia cugini, zii, zie

Per lo più adulti, coppia di marmocchi

La piccola Ruby ha solo due anni, è troppo vicina ai saltelli

La mamma la porta a casa, allaccia il seggiolino

La fa rotolare verso la porta della tempesta, lasciala desiderare tutta la follia

Telefono che distrae la mamma, Ruby tira fuori la cinghia

Le dita spingono il plexiglass, lei è fuori nella zona acida

Oltre i fuochi d'artificio, inosservati e invisibili

Svegliò il beagle addormentato che saltellava verso la piscina dei reni

Nell'azzurro sbadigliante, lo scroscio avrebbe mutilato le navi a razzo

I polmoni di Ruby si stavano riempiendo quando i suoi parenti furono consapevoli

Molti sono balzati e scattati giù, tutti arrivano tardi ma

La bestia che aveva agitato in precedenza era stata vigile da quando si era svegliata

Canine fa volare il suo gainer, cresce il trambusto dell'acqua

Gli ospiti ululanti presumono che gli zoccoli spaccati fossero venuti per do-si-do

Deck frenetico e congestionato, parte per far vedere gli altri

Beagle fradicio che trascina delicatamente Ruby tra i suoi denti gialli

Posò il minuscolo corpo al sole davanti ai piedi di suo padre

Quando ha soffocato il liquido attraverso le sue labbra bluastre, ha lasciato cadere il ginocchio

Aiuta l'aria a riunirsi, asciuga il suo Ruby che trema

EMT conferma il salvataggio, tutti dicono «bravo cane!»
