I met her in the usual place, I made the same old play

She gave the perfect answers, so I knew I was on my way

I bought her drinks and then I said: «It's time to take you home.»

She licked her lips and said: «Okay, but I gotta use the phone …»

While she was gone I saw my friends and told them I had scored

I’d see them all next morning when we’d leave for Baltimore

She came right back, her coat in hand, she smiled and said: «Let's go!»

And when we left I noticed there was no-one she didn’t know

She had a car (they always do), we drove into the night

A small apartment, just two rooms, she switched on all the lights

That’s when I saw the photographs, framed and each one signed

From every guy who played this town, the message underlined

Just one more smiling face on the wall:

See you next time around, So glad you called

«I'll put your photo right here in this space —

Now write a message to me!»

— Across my face …

She asked me if I knew the guys who play in the UFO

I seem to hear that question just every place I go

She showed me lots more photographs covering one wall

And I noticed that this little girl was starring in them all

I felt just like a butterfly waiting for the slide

The pin was poised, the frame all set, I shivered cold inside

The collector set her camera up and whispered: «Smile for me!»

Remote control, the flash went off — and I joined her gallery

Just one more smiling face on the wall:

See you next time around, So glad you called

«I'll put your photo right here in this space —

Now write a message to me!»

— Across my face …

L'ho incontrata nel solito posto, ho fatto la stessa vecchia commedia

Ha dato le risposte perfette, quindi sapevo che stavo arrivando

Le ho comprato da bere e poi le ho detto: «È ora di portarti a casa».

Si leccò le labbra e disse: «Va bene, ma devo usare il telefono...»

Mentre era via, ho visto i miei amici e ho detto loro che avevo segnato

Li avrei visti tutti la mattina dopo quando saremmo partiti per Baltimora

È tornata subito con il cappotto in mano, ha sorriso e ha detto: «Andiamo!»

E quando ce ne siamo andati ho notato che non c'era nessuno che lei non conoscesse

Aveva un'auto (lo fanno sempre), abbiamo guidato nella notte

Un piccolo appartamento, solo due stanze, accese tutte le luci

Fu allora che vidi le fotografie, incorniciate e ciascuna firmata

Da ogni ragazzo che ha interpretato questa città, sottolineava il messaggio

Solo un'altra faccia sorridente sul muro:

Alla prossima volta, sono felice che tu abbia chiamato

«Metterò la tua foto proprio qui in questo spazio —

Adesso scrivimi un messaggio!»

— Attraverso la mia faccia...

Mi ha chiesto se conoscevo i ragazzi che giocano negli UFO

Mi sembra di sentire quella domanda in ogni posto in cui vado

Mi ha mostrato molte altre fotografie che coprono una parete

E ho notato che questa bambina recitava in tutti loro

Mi sentivo proprio come una farfalla in attesa della diapositiva

Lo spillo era in bilico, il telaio tutto pronto, dentro di me tremavo di freddo

Il collezionista ha installato la sua macchina fotografica e ha sussurrato: «Sorridi per me!»

Telecomando, il flash si è spento e mi sono unito alla sua galleria

Solo un'altra faccia sorridente sul muro:

Alla prossima volta, sono felice che tu abbia chiamato

«Metterò la tua foto proprio qui in questo spazio —

Adesso scrivimi un messaggio!»

— Attraverso la mia faccia...
