The Bite - Comus

The wolf’s laugh eerie cracks the humid night air

The rabbit freezes the fox in his lair

The owl hoots shrilly searching the dark

The moon white flangs through the trees tall and stark

Who would emerge on a night like this

Who would loose his bonds and greet the air with a hiss

The battered Christian bow his head in despair

The crown of sharp thorns revealed 'neath his hair

His scrawny body worn thin by the trial

Stands taut and painful on the pilgrim’s last mile

A million fleshy things converge upon the spot

His eye retort the atmosphere is hot

The wolf sniffs ivory fanged he bristles up his spine

The fox smiles knowingly but dares not step out of line

Through the twisting crushing silence the broken Christian creeps

Each footstep like a thunderclap amongst the trunky deeps

No bird makes sound no creature moves to break the gripping air

And the Christian he raises his hand up to his mouth

But for a whisper he cannot dare

The Christian wakes trembling with sweat

The cell’s dark walls stony and wet

Metallic echoes as the bolts are drawn back

The doors swing inwards dull light through the crack

The jailer looks indifferent to him

A routine morning martyr’s death for him

A misty cold sad morning greets the Christian’s haggard grin

The rope is slung and the noose is tied, and Christian’s neck is thin

The block is raised he stands erect, the rope beneath his chin

They pull the block and the Christian drops

He hangs above the sin

La risata inquietante del lupo rompe l'aria umida della notte

Il coniglio congela la volpe nella sua tana

Il gufo fischia stridulo scrutando il buio

Il bianco lunare sventola tra gli alberi alti e spogli

Chi emergerebbe in una notte come questa

Chi scioglierebbe i suoi legami e saluterebbe l'aria con un sibilo

Il malconcio cristiano china la testa per la disperazione

La corona di spine aguzze rivelava 'sotto i suoi capelli

Il suo corpo magro e logoro dal processo

È teso e doloroso durante l'ultimo miglio del pellegrino

Un milione di cose carnose convergono sul posto

Il suo occhio ribatte che l'atmosfera è calda

Il lupo annusa le zanne d'avorio e si irrigidisce la spina dorsale

La volpe sorride consapevolmente ma non osa uscire dalla linea

Attraverso il silenzio contorto e schiacciante il cristiano infranto si insinua

Ogni passo è come un tuono tra gli abissi tronchi

Nessun uccello emette suoni, nessuna creatura si muove per rompere l'aria che stringe

E il cristiano porta la mano alla bocca

Ma per un sussurro non può osare

Il cristiano si sveglia tremante di sudore

Le pareti scure della cella sassose e umide

Echi metallici quando i bulloni vengono ritirati

Le porte oscillano verso l'interno con una luce fioca attraverso la fessura

Il carceriere gli sembra indifferente

Una morte di routine mattutina per lui

Una nebbiosa fredda mattina triste saluta il sorriso smunto del cristiano

La corda è appesa e il cappio è legato e il collo di Christian è sottile

Il blocco è alzato lui sta in piedi, la corda sotto il mento

Tirano il blocco e il cristiano cade

È appeso al di sopra del peccato
