Summer days

Some are days like these.

Dreary days

Dreary days like these

I have not the courage

To rise up before my fellow-men as a prophet,

And I bow to their reproach

That I offer them no consolation:

For at bottom that is what they are all demanding

The wildest revolutionaries no less passionately

Than the most virtuous believers.

The fateful question for the human species

Seems to me to be whether and to what extent

Their cultural development will succeed in mastering

The disturbance of their communal life

Le giornate estive sono qui

Giorni d'estate

Alcuni sono giorni come questi.

Giorni tetri

Giornate tristi come queste

Non ho il coraggio

Insorgere davanti ai miei compagni come un profeta,

E mi inchino al loro rimprovero

Che non offro loro alcuna consolazione:

Perché in fondo questo è ciò che tutti chiedono

I rivoluzionari più selvaggi non meno appassionatamente

Che i credenti più virtuosi.

La fatidica domanda per la specie umana

Mi sembra che sia se e in che misura

Il loro sviluppo culturale riuscirà a padroneggiarlo

Il disturbo della loro vita comunitaria
