Stand Up For Judas - Dick Gaughan

The Romans were the masters

When Jesus walked the land

In Judea and in Galilee

They ruled with an iron hand

The poor were sick with hunger

And the rich were clothed in splendour

And the rebels, whipped and crucified

Hung rotting as a warning

And Jesus knew the answer —

«Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s»

Said, «Love your enemies»

But Judas was a Zealot and he

Wanted to be free

«Resist», he said, «the Romans' tyranny»

So stand up, stand up for Judas

And the cause that Judas served

It was Jesus who betrayed the poor with his word

Now Jesus was a conjuror

Miracles were his game

He fed the hungry thousands

And they glorified his name

He cured the lame and leper

He calmed the wind and the weather

And the wretched flocked to touch him

So their troubles would be taken

And Jesus knew the answer —

«All you who labour, all you who suffer

Only believe in me»

But Judas sought a world where no-one

Starved or begged for bread

«The poor are always with us», Jesus said

Now Jesus sowed division

Where none had been before

Not the slave against the master

But the poor against the poor

Caused son to rise up against father

And brother to fight against brother

For «He that is not with me

Is against me» was his teaching

Said Jesus, «I am the answer

You unbelievers shall burn forever

Shall die in your sins»

«Not sheep or goats» said Judas but

«Together we may dare

Shake off the chains of tyranny we share»

Jesus stood upon the mountain

With a distance in his eyes

«I am the Way, the Life» he cried

«The Light that never dies

So renounce all earthly treasures

And pray to your heavenly father»

And he pacified the hopeless

With the hope of life eternal

Said Jesus, «I am the answer

And you who hunger only remember

Your reward’s in heaven»

So Jesus preached the other world

But Judas wanted this

And he betrayed his master with a kiss

By sword and gun and crucifix

Christ’s gospel has been spread

And two thousand cruel years have shown

The way that Jesus led

The heretics burned and tortured

And the butchering bloody Crusaders

The bombs and rockets sanctified

That rain down death from heaven

They followed Jesus, they knew the answer

All unbelievers must be believers

Or else be broken

«So place no trust in saviours»

Judas said, «for everyone

Must be to his or her own self a sun»

I romani erano i padroni

Quando Gesù camminò per la terra

In Giudea e in Galilea

Governavano con mano di ferro

I poveri erano malati di fame

E i ricchi erano rivestiti di splendore

E i ribelli, frustati e crocifissi

Appeso in decomposizione come avvertimento

E Gesù conosceva la risposta:

«Date a Cesare ciò che è di Cesare»

Disse: «Ama i tuoi nemici»

Ma Giuda era uno zelota e lui

Volevo essere libero

«Resistere», disse, «alla tirannia dei romani»

Quindi alzati, alzati in piedi per Giuda

E la causa che servì Giuda

È stato Gesù a tradire i poveri con la sua parola

Ora Gesù era un prestigiatore

I miracoli erano il suo gioco

Ha sfamato migliaia di affamati

E glorificarono il suo nome

Guarì zoppi e lebbrosi

Ha calmato il vento e il tempo

E i disgraziati accorsero per toccarlo

Quindi i loro guai sarebbero stati presi

E Gesù conosceva la risposta:

«Tutti voi che affaticate, tutti voi che soffrite

Credi solo in me»

Ma Giuda ha cercato un mondo in cui nessuno

Affamato o implorato per il pane

«I poveri sono sempre con noi», disse Gesù

Ora Gesù seminò divisione

Dove nessuno era mai stato prima

Non lo schiavo contro il padrone

Ma i poveri contro i poveri

Ha fatto insorgere il figlio contro il padre

E fratello per combattere contro il fratello

Perché «Colui che non è con me

È contro di me» fu il suo insegnamento

Gesù disse: «Io sono la risposta

Voi miscredenti brucerete per sempre

Morirà nei tuoi peccati»

«Non pecore o capre» disse Giuda ma

«Insieme potremmo osare

Scrollarsi di dosso le catene della tirannia che condividiamo»

Gesù si fermò sul monte

Con una distanza nei suoi occhi

«Io sono la Via, la Vita» gridò

«La Luce che non muore mai

Quindi rinuncia a tutti i tesori terreni

E prega il tuo padre celeste»

E ha pacificato i senza speranza

Con la speranza della vita eterna

Gesù disse: «Io sono la risposta

E tu che hai fame ricorda solo

La tua ricompensa è in paradiso»

Quindi Gesù predicò l'altro mondo

Ma Giuda voleva questo

E ha tradito il suo padrone con un bacio

Con spada e pistola e crocifisso

Il vangelo di Cristo è stato diffuso

E duemila anni crudeli hanno mostrato

La via che Gesù ha condotto

Gli eretici bruciarono e torturarono

E i sanguinari crociati massacranti

Le bombe ei razzi santificati

Che piovono morte dal cielo

Hanno seguito Gesù, hanno conosciuto la risposta

Tutti i non credenti devono essere credenti

Oppure essere rotto

«Quindi non riporre fiducia nei salvatori»

Giuda disse: «per tutti

Deve essere per se stesso un sole»
