Growing Up - Ed Bruce

Second day of third grade, Three Oaks Elementary

She sat in the first row, I was all the way across the room

It might as well have been the far side of the moon

I had to get her attention, she wouldn’t look at me

I waited for the bell to ring, and when we went outside for recess

I put a cricket down the backside of her dress

Had to take a note home, Mama spanked my butt

Daddy hugged me, «Son, that’s part of growing up»

You live and learn to give and take

When to use your strength

And when you need a gentle touch

Sometimes it takes patience

Sometimes a greater store of love

You learn it growing up

Andy was my best friend, all the way through high school

We couldn’t wait for Friday night

We’d chip in change for gas in his car and roam

One night I was grounded so he went out on his own

Two o’clock in the morning, I’d just gotten to sleep

Mama took the call and woke me

«That was Andy’s Daddy on the phone»

Andy missed that hairpin curve on Levee Road

Andy loved to run hard, he never buckled up

Mama held me when I cried growing up

You live and learn to give and take

When to pray for strength

When understanding’s not enough

Look life in the eye

Even when the road gets rough

It’s not easy growing up

I can’t forget the day she called me home from work

The pains were getting closer

She said, «Hon, don’t panic, but it’s time to go»

We named him «Andy"for a friend I used to know

It hit me just this morning, I dropped him off at school

No great revelation

I bowed my head and thanked the Lord for all I’ve got

Little league and family picnics in the park

Both our folks are doing well, the circle’s filling out

I treasure every moment;

I’m still growing up

You live and learn to give and take

Always try to do your best

And hope that it’s enough

If you don’t lose the faith

You’ll always find the love

It’s all part of growing up

Si è seduta in prima fila, io ero dall'altra parte della stanza

Potrebbe anche essere stato il lato opposto della luna

Dovevo attirare la sua attenzione, non mi guardava

Ho aspettato che suonasse la campanella e quando siamo usciti per la ricreazione

Le ho messo un grillo sul retro del vestito

Ho dovuto prendere un biglietto a casa, la mamma mi ha sculacciato

Papà mi ha abbracciato: «Figliolo, questo fa parte del crescere»

Vivi e impari a dare e avere

Quando usare la tua forza

E quando hai bisogno di un tocco delicato

A volte ci vuole pazienza

A volte un maggior negozio di amore

Lo impari crescendo

Andy è stato il mio migliore amico, fino al liceo

Non potevamo aspettare venerdì sera

Noi inserivamo il resto per il carburante nella sua macchina e girovagavamo

Una notte sono stato messo a terra, quindi è uscito da solo

Alle due del mattino, ero appena riuscito a dormire

La mamma ha risposto alla chiamata e mi ha svegliato

«Quello era il papà di Andy al telefono»

Andy ha mancato quel tornante su Levee Road

Andy amava correre forte, non si allacciava mai

La mamma mi ha tenuto quando piangevo crescendo

Vivi e impari a dare e avere

Quando pregare per avere forza

Quando la comprensione non basta

Guarda la vita negli occhi

Anche quando la strada si fa accidentata

Non è facile crescere

Non posso dimenticare il giorno in cui mi ha chiamato a casa dal lavoro

I dolori si stavano avvicinando

Ha detto: "Tesoro, niente panico, ma è ora di andare"

L'abbiamo chiamato "Andy" per un amico che conoscevo

Mi ha colpito solo stamattina, l'ho lasciato a scuola

Nessuna grande rivelazione

Ho chinato il capo e ringraziato il Signore per tutto quello che ho

Piccola lega e picnic in famiglia nel parco

Entrambi i nostri stanno bene, il cerchio si sta riempiendo

Faccio tesoro di ogni momento;

Sto ancora crescendo

Vivi e impari a dare e avere

Cerca sempre di fare del tuo meglio

E spero che sia abbastanza

Se non perdi la fede

Troverai sempre l'amore

Fa tutto parte della crescita
