I have fetched the tears up out of the little wells,

Scooped them up with small, iron words,

Dripping over the runnels.

The harsh, cold wind of my words drove on, and still

I watched the tears on the guilty cheek of the men

Glitter and spill.

Close your eyes and see what’s behind you

Let your pain not guide you to nothing

Make your sacrifice for the living

Step outside the fire that burns you

Cringing Pity, and Love, white-handed, came

Hovering about the Judgment which stood in my eyes,

Whirling a flame.

Like a flower that the frost has hugged and let go,

My head is heavy, and my heart beats slowly

My strength is shed.

The tears are dry, and the cheeks' young fruits are fresh

With laughter, and clear the exonerated eyes, since pain

Beat through the flesh.

The Angel of Judgment has departed again to the Nearness.

Desolate I am as a church whose lights are put out.

And night enters in dreariness.

Close your eyes and see what’s behind you

The fire rose up in the bush and blazed apace,

The thorn-leaves crackled and twisted in anguish;

Then God left the place.

Like a flower that the frost has hugged and let go,

My strength is shed.

Ho raccolto le lacrime dai pozzi,

Li raccolse con parole piccole e di ferro,

Gocciolando sui canali.

Il vento duro e freddo delle mie parole continuava, e immobile

Ho osservato le lacrime sulla guancia colpevole degli uomini

Scintillio e versamento.

Chiudi gli occhi e guarda cosa c'è dietro di te

Lascia che il tuo dolore non ti guidi verso il nulla

Fai il tuo sacrificio per i vivi

Esci dal fuoco che ti brucia

Vennero pietà e amore, con le mani bianche

In bilico sul Giudizio che era nei miei occhi,

Girare una fiamma.

Come un fiore che il gelo ha abbracciato e lasciato andare,

La mia testa è pesante e il mio cuore batte lentamente

La mia forza è persa.

Le lacrime sono secche e i giovani frutti delle guance sono freschi

Con risate, e chiari gli occhi esonerati, dal dolore

Batti la carne.

L'Angelo del Giudizio è partito di nuovo verso la Vicinanza.

Desolato sono come una chiesa le cui luci sono spente.

E la notte entra nella tristezza.

Chiudi gli occhi e guarda cosa c'è dietro di te

Lascia che il tuo dolore non ti guidi verso il nulla

Fai il tuo sacrificio per i vivi

Esci dal fuoco che ti brucia

Il fuoco si alzò nella boscaglia e divampò veloce,

Le foglie spinose crepitavano e si contorcevano per l'angoscia;

Poi Dio ha lasciato il posto.

Come un fiore che il gelo ha abbracciato e lasciato andare,

La mia testa è pesante e il mio cuore batte lentamente,

La mia forza è persa.
