Carmelita was a street angel but she kept her halo hid

Never learned to read or write so well, she was just a farmer’s kid

She took communion at the age of twelve, she wore a cross of wood

She heard the clanging of the mission bell

And she vowed that she’d be good

But the world goes round and it’s hard enough to stand your ground

There’s always someone tryin' to keep you down in a border town

Mamacita said you can’t go down, stay away from the white man’s world

She drew the line at the edge of town for her little, dark-haired girl

But Carmelita she had other plans and her life had just begun

She ran away with a black-eyed man and he left her with a black-eyed son

But the world goes round and it’s hard enough to stand your ground

Carmelita, now she’s settlin' down, she’s not so free and wild

She rides a bus, all the way across town to love somebody else’s child

Shows up each morning, right on time and at six o’clock, she’s gone

She keeps her distance and she toes the line

'Cause she knows where it’s been drawn

Carmelita era un angelo di strada ma teneva nascosta la sua aureola

Non ha mai imparato a leggere o scrivere così bene, era solo la figlia di un contadino

Ha preso la comunione all'età di dodici anni, indossava una croce di legno

Sentì il clangore della campana della missione

E ha giurato che sarebbe stata brava

Ma il mondo gira ed è già abbastanza difficile mantenere la tua posizione

C'è sempre qualcuno che cerca di tenerti giù in una città di confine

Mamacita ha detto che non puoi scendere, stai lontano dal mondo dei bianchi

Ha tracciato la linea al confine della città per la sua bambina dai capelli scuri

Ma Carmelita aveva altri progetti e la sua vita era appena iniziata

È scappata con un uomo dagli occhi neri e lui l'ha lasciata con un figlio dagli occhi neri

Ma il mondo gira ed è già abbastanza difficile mantenere la tua posizione

C'è sempre qualcuno che cerca di tenerti giù in una città di confine

Carmelita, ora si sta sistemando, non è così libera e selvaggia

Lei guida un autobus, attraversa la città per amare il figlio di qualcun altro

Si presenta ogni mattina, puntuale e alle  sei in punto, non c'è più

Si mantiene a distanza e si mette al passo

Perché lei sa dove è stato disegnato

Ma il mondo gira ed è già abbastanza difficile mantenere la tua posizione
