To me, the wood’s a puzzle with a fate inside

For those who’ll live and love, who will crow and cry

A song in spar and strake’s released with bladed bite

Each splinter tells a tale

And through my working, so will I

For a boat begins in earth

And she’s married to the water

She’ll live her life in freedom

And by rock or fire she’ll founder

Through her, my hands will know the wind and swell

Through her, my hands might know the fire as well

The sail will stretch above her, reaching for the sun

She’ll strain against her ropes, impatient to be gone

With joy she’ll learn the dances of the proud and strong

Each heart will grow to trust her

And in time will learn her song

For a boat begins in earth

And she’s married to the water

She’ll live her life in freedom

And by rock or fire she’ll founder

Through her, my hands will know the wind and swell

Through her, my hands might know the fire as well

I’ve never left the land, but I serve the sea

A poet knows his Muse in all her majesty

My ships will meet the sunset and fly far and free

And when I’m gone

There’ll come someone

Whose craft remembers me

Per me, il legno è un puzzle con un destino dentro

Per coloro che vivranno e ameranno, che canteranno e piangeranno

Una canzone in spar e strake è rilasciata con un morso a lama

Ogni scheggia racconta una storia

E attraverso il mio lavoro, lo farò anche io

Perché una barca inizia nella terra

Ed è sposata con l'acqua

Vivrà la sua vita in libertà

E con roccia o fuoco naufraga

Attraverso di lei, le mie mani conosceranno il vento e si gonfieranno

Attraverso di lei, anche le mie mani potrebbero conoscere il fuoco

La vela si allungherà sopra di lei, raggiungendo il sole

Si sforzerà contro le sue corde, impaziente di andarsene

Con gioia imparerà le danze degli orgogliosi e dei forti

Ogni cuore crescerà per fidarsi di lei

E col tempo imparerà la sua canzone

Perché una barca inizia nella terra

Ed è sposata con l'acqua

Non ho mai lasciato la terra, ma servo il mare

Un poeta conosce la sua Musa in tutta sua maestà

Le mie navi incontreranno il tramonto e voleranno lontane e libere

E quando me ne sarò andato

Verrà qualcuno

Il cui mestiere si ricorda di me
