How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,

Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!

What more can He say than to you He hath said,

To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

«Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,

For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;

I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand

Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

«When through the deep waters I call thee to go,

The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;

For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,

And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

«When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,

My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;

The flame shall not hurt thee;

I only design

Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

«The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose,

I will not, I will not desert to it’s foes;

That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,

I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.»

«Even down to old age all my people shall prove

My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;

And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,

Like lambs they shall still in my bosom be borne.»

In every condition, in sickness, in health;

In poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth;

At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea,

As thy days may demand, shall thy strength every be.

Cos'altro può dire se non a te che ha detto:

A te che per rifugio presso Gesù siete fuggiti?

«Non temere, io sono con te, non ti sgomentare,

Poiché io sono il tuo Dio e ti darò ancora aiuto;

Ti rafforzerò e ti aiuterò e ti farò stare in piedi

Sostenuto dalla mia mano giusta e onnipotente.

«Quando attraverso le acque profonde ti chiamo ad andare,

I fiumi di dolore non ti traboccheranno;

Perché io sarò con te, i tuoi guai per benedire,

E santifica per te la tua più profonda angoscia.

«Quando attraverso prove infuocate i tuoi sentieri giaceranno,

La mia grazia, tutta sufficiente, sarà la tua provvista;

La fiamma non ti farà male;

Io progetto solo

Le tue scorie da consumare e il tuo oro da raffinare.

«L'anima che su Gesù si appoggia ancora per il riposo,

Io non, io non diserterò ai suoi nemici;

Quell'anima, anche se tutto l'inferno dovrebbe sforzarsi di scuotere,

Non abbandonerò mai, no mai, no mai.»

«Fino alla vecchiaia tutto il mio popolo lo dimostrerà

Il mio amore sovrano, eterno, immutabile;

E quando i capelli canuti adorneranno le loro tempie,

Come agnelli dovranno ancora essere portati nel mio seno».

In ogni condizione, in malattia, in salute;

Nella valle della povertà, o abbondante nella ricchezza;

In patria e all'estero, in terra, in mare,

Come i tuoi giorni possono richiedere, la tua forza sarà ogni volta.
