The night soon claims the day,

Shadows grow long where I lay,

I watch the sunlight dance off my wall

As leaves fall down in vain.

I had you on my mind,

I think I see you sometimes

I smile when I think of that Betsey dress,

And that night when we were a mess.

I’m going to watch it fade away

Into Remembrance Day.

I saw you standing there,

Unraveling in the autumn air,

You’re going to ask if I’m painting again,

And I’ll ask if you write much these days

And you still laugh the same

We still laugh without shame,

But in between words, a silence ensues,

And I know, I’m losing you
