Old Tige - Jim Reeves

Three years of Army Service done and I was headin' home at last

I got to thinking 'bout my dog and things long gone past

How old Tige pulled me from a creek when I had no pulse or breath

How he saved me from the changin' bull that gored my Dad to death

As a kid I’d dream of bears and tremble to my toes

Till old Tige come up to my bed and nudge me with his nose

Then my fears would melt away and Tige would go lie down

I’d drift on back to sleep without another sound

The big bus stopped and I got off it was awful dark and thick with fog

Then something gently nuzzled me and there stood Tige my dog

I wondered if my faithful dog had met the bus each day

And all the dreary winter nights since I’d been away

Have Tige meet me here like this I was I was really glad

'Cause I hadn’t needed Tige so much since the day they’ve burried Dad

Too long miles still lay ahead but what I didn’t know

A giant Dam was being built where the old road used to go

I think the Lord was sending Tige and I followed where he led

Knowing well without his help that I’d be good as dead

Tige inched along this way and that going rough and slow

And I could hear the water a lappin' at the ledges far below

Then through the mist I saw a light and mother in her chair

And I reached down to pet old Tige but he wasn’t there

I’m thankful Mom you had old Tige these three lonely years

I owe my life to him tonight I couldn’t help my tears

You say you wrote me bout the Dam well God was sure with us

I didn’t get your letter Mom but old Tige met the bus

I hate to tell you son she said but now you’ve got to know

When you left it broke his heart Tige died three years ago

(You were my best friend.)…

Tre anni di servizio militare fatto e finalmente stavo tornando a casa

Devo pensare al mio cane e a cose passate da tempo

Quanti anni Tige mi ha tirato da un ruscello quando non avevo polso o respiro

Come mi ha salvato dal toro mutevole che ha incornato a morte mio padre

Da bambino sognavo gli orsi e tremavo fino alle dita dei piedi

Finché il vecchio Tige non viene al mio letto e mi dà una gomitata con il naso

Poi le mie paure si scioglierebbero e Tige si sdraierà

Tornavo a dormire senza un altro suono

Il grande autobus si è fermato e sono sceso da quello era terribilmente buio e fitto di nebbia

Poi qualcosa mi sfiorò delicatamente il naso e lì c'era Tige, il mio cane

Mi chiedevo se il mio fedele cane avesse incontrato l'autobus ogni giorno

E tutte le tetre notti d'inverno da quando ero via

Chiedi a Tige di incontrarmi qui in questo modo, ero davvero felice

Perché non avevo bisogno di Tige così tanto dal giorno in cui hanno seppellito papà

Ci sarebbero ancora troppe miglia da percorrere, ma cosa non sapevo

Si stava costruendo una diga gigante dove un tempo andava la vecchia strada

Penso che il Signore stesse mandando Tige e io l'ho seguito dove ha condotto

Sapendo bene senza il suo aiuto che sarei quasi morto

Tige avanzava lentamente da questa parte e dall'altra andando ruvida e lenta

E potevo sentire l'acqua sciabordare sulle sporgenze molto più in basso

Poi attraverso la nebbia vidi una luce e una madre sulla sedia

E mi sono avvicinato per accarezzare il vecchio Tige ma lui non c'era

Sono grata mamma che hai avuto la vecchia Tige in questi tre anni solitari

Gli devo la mia vita stasera, non ho potuto trattenere le lacrime

Dici di avermi scritto sulla diga bene che Dio era sicuro con noi

Non ho ricevuto la tua lettera, mamma, ma la vecchia Tige ha incontrato l'autobus

Odio dire a te figlio che ha detto, ma ora devi saperlo

Quando te ne sei andato, gli si è spezzato il cuore, Tige è morta tre anni fa
