Southern trees bear a strange fruit

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root

Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze

Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees

Pastoral scene of the gallant south

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth

Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh

Then the sudden smell of burning flesh

Here is a fruit for the crow to pluck

For the rain to wither, for the wind to suck

For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop

Here is a strange and bitter crop

Gli alberi del sud danno uno strano frutto

Sangue sulle foglie e sangue alla radice

Corpi neri che oscillano nella brezza del sud

Strani frutti appesi ai pioppi

Scena pastorale del galante sud

Gli occhi sporgenti e la bocca contorta

Profumo di magnolia dolce e fresco

Poi l'improvviso odore di carne bruciata

Ecco un frutto da cogliere al corvo

Perché la pioggia appassisca, perché il vento risucchi

Che il sole marcisca, che gli alberi cadano

Ecco un raccolto strano e amaro
