There’s tombstone in a snowy field

Close by an old ghost town

The epitaph’s been weather-blown away

There’s a belltower where petitions peeled

It’s been half torn down

But it must have softened every soul that came to pray

There’s a schoolhouse full of broken glass

And wounded walls

The rusty swings like derelicts sleeping in the weeds

There’s a picture-graduation class

Staring down deserted halls

«THE HOPE OF 44» is what it reads

It’s just as if some restless wind blew their dreams away far away

It’s just as if those dreams had never been but oh-

I feel their ghosts around me now- I hear them say

They’ve come back home to dream those dreams again

C'è una lapide in un campo innevato

Vicino a un'antica città fantasma

L'epitaffio è stato spazzato via dalle intemperie

C'è un campanile dove sbucciavano le petizioni

È stato mezzo demolito

Ma deve aver ammorbidito ogni anima venuta a pregare

C'è una scuola piena di vetri rotti

E muri feriti

Le oscillazioni arrugginite come derelitti che dormono tra le erbacce

C'è un corso di laurea per immagini

Fissando corridoi deserti

«LA SPERANZA DEL 44» è ciò che si legge

È proprio come se un vento irrequieto portasse via i loro sogni lontano

È proprio come se quei sogni non fossero mai stati ma oh-

Sento i loro fantasmi intorno a me ora, li sento dire

Sono tornati a casa per sognare di nuovo quei sogni
