Fresh Fossils - Loudon Wainwright III

Now I’m walking on the beach I came to understand

With each step I left a footprint, a fresh fossil in the sand

Looking over my left shoulder, behind lay my old track

And I will be my old man, Friday or whenever I came back

Up ahead I saw the future, a streach of barren beach

I knew that I was heading nowhere, the horizon out of reach

So I turned and headed back, I was present in my past

Now and then mere twin directions, the next intersecting the last

There was proof that I had been there, and proof I’d come and gone

Inprinted in the sand’s a time so why should I walk home

Now and then I’m gonna go though then I’m not the same

And future waves with araised both as if I never came

Ora sto camminando sulla spiaggia che ho capito

Ad ogni passo ho lasciato un'impronta, un fossile fresco nella sabbia

Guardando oltre la mia spalla sinistra, dietro c'era la mia vecchia pista

E sarò il mio vecchio, venerdì o ogni volta che tornerò

Più avanti ho visto il futuro, una striscia di spiaggia arida

Sapevo che non stavo andando da nessuna parte, l'orizzonte era fuori portata

Quindi mi sono girato e sono tornato indietro, ero presente nel mio passato

Di tanto in tanto semplici direzioni gemelle, la prossima che interseca l'ultima

C'era la prova che ero stato lì e la prova che ero andato e venuto

Stampato nella sabbia è un momento, quindi perché dovrei tornare a casa a piedi

Di tanto in tanto andrò anche se poi non sono più lo stesso

E le onde future si sono sollevate entrambi come se non fossi mai arrivato
