Birds are the omens of mornin'

The silent brick buildings asleep standin' up

My restless mind comes without warnin'

As I drink down the water of a half empty cup

I’ll kiss the ground where I’m goin'

Where rainy steel beacons are kissin' the sky

I find my bliss without knowin'

But if I wasn’t hurtin' I wouldn’t ask why

We laid them down in the ground

I held back the rivers that flood in my eyes

And I prayed no ghost would be found

But I talked to the tombstones and I talked to the sky

Some day I’ll make for the ocean

Across the dead desert to the bright golden coast

I’m livin' my life on the notion

That ambition brings breakfast and butters our toast

Somebody shut down the furnace

So I pleaded with the train tracks and the fire escapes

Sell me a tall tale in earnest

Or else close the curtains and lower the drapes

We laid them down in the ground

I held back the rivers that flood in my eyes

And I prayed no ghost would be found

Nothin' I own is worth takin'

Up to the legion with shackles and stars

I’m tired of fightin' and fakin'

Too tired to follow processions of cars

You told me to not put my faith in

A phase of my life that’s almost been closed

Well I hope that another door opens

Until then I’ll try to keep myself composed
