The Calling

So many paths not taken

So many words unsaid —

Though I travel far, they bind me

In a web of golden thread

I can hear a far-off calling

As the water flows ahead

I am waiting for the river-man

In the hidden riverbed

On the bank, three women passing

They measure time for me —

In the mirror of the water

They can but darkly see

I will walk beyond the meadows

With a child in either hand

Through the river’s many shadows

We will pass from land to land

All the promises unspoken

Lie like fallen leaves on the ground

But the thread is still unbroken

And the hidden may be found

When the wheeling birds are leaving

They pass the sinking sun

We will travel with the river-man

Until time and time is run.

La chiamata

Tanti percorsi non presi

Tante parole non dette —

Anche se viaggio lontano, mi legano

In una rete di fili d'oro

Riesco a sentire una chiamata lontana

Mentre l'acqua scorre avanti

Sto aspettando l'uomo del fiume

Nel letto nascosto del fiume

Sulla riva, tre donne di passaggio

Misurano il tempo per me -

Nello specchio dell'acqua

Possono solo vedere oscuramente

Camminerò oltre i prati

Con un bambino in entrambe le mani

Attraverso le molte ombre del fiume

Passeremo di terra in terra

Tutte le promesse non dette

Sdraiati come foglie cadute a terra

Ma il filo è ancora ininterrotto

E il nascosto può essere trovato

Quando gli uccelli volanti se ne vanno

Passano il sole che tramonta

Viaggeremo con l'uomo del fiume

Fino a quando il tempo e il tempo non sono scaduti.
