I went out to the hazel wood

Because a fire was in my head

And cut and peeled a hazel wand

And hooked a berry to a thread;

And when white moths were on the wing

And moth-like stars were flickering out

I dropped the berry in a stream

And caught a little silver trout

When I had laid it on the floor

I went to blow the fire aflame

But something rustled on the floor

And some one called me by my name:

It had become a glimmering girl

With apple blossom in her hair

Who called me by my name and ran

And faded through the brightening air

When I am old with wandering

Through hollow lands and hilly lands

I will find out where she has gone

And kiss her lips and take her hands;

And walk among long dappled grass

And pluck till time and times are done

The silver apples of the moon

The golden apples of the sun

Sono uscito al bosco di nocciole

Perché un fuoco era nella mia testa

E taglia e sbuccia una bacchetta di nocciola

E ho agganciato una bacca a un filo;

E quando le falene bianche erano in volo

E stelle simili a falene stavano tremolando

Ho lasciato cadere la bacca in un ruscello

E catturato una piccola trota d'argento

Quando l'ho posato sul pavimento

Sono andato a soffiare sul fuoco

Ma qualcosa frusciava sul pavimento

E qualcuno mi ha chiamato per il mio nome:

Era diventata una ragazza scintillante

Con i fiori di melo tra i capelli

Chi mi ha chiamato per il mio nome ed è scappato

E svanì nell'aria che si illuminava

Quando sarò vecchio con il vagabondaggio

Attraverso terre cave e terreni collinari

Scoprirò dove è andata

E baciale le labbra e prendile le mani;

E camminare tra l'erba lunga screziata

E cogli finché il tempo e i tempi non sono finiti

Le mele d'argento della luna

Le mele d'oro del sole
