64 - The Marquis de Tren, Bonnie "Prince" Billy

On the slope of the creek I ask her «Where are you going, hiding your

flashlight with your coat?

My house is all dark and lonesome, lend me that light.»

She raised her dark eyes for a moment and looked at my fave through the dusk

«I've come to the creek» she said

«to shine my flashlight on the animals in the water when it gets dark.»

It got darker and I asked again if she would bring her light to my house

'cause there were no animals in the water

There was nothing living, moving

She said «I'm gonna shine it on the sky, it will reach a star.»

I watched her shine the light uselessly into the sky

And in the moonless gloom of midnight

I asked her why she held the light still, close to her chest

«My house is all dark and lonesome, lend me your light.»

«I need it to walk home with» she said

«I can’t see in the dark, like a cat»

And I watched get lost among the trees and into the lights of the houses

Sul pendio del torrente le chiedo «Dove vai, nascondi il tuo

torcia con il tuo cappotto?

La mia casa è tutta buia e solitaria, prestami quella luce.»

Alzò gli occhi scuri per un momento e guardò il mio preferito attraverso il crepuscolo

«Sono venuta al ruscello» disse

"per illuminare la mia torcia sugli animali nell'acqua quando fa buio."

Si è fatto più buio e le ho chiesto di nuovo se avrebbe portato la sua luce a casa mia

perché non c'erano animali nell'acqua

Non c'era niente di vivo, di movimento

Ha detto: "Lo farò brillare nel cielo, raggiungerà una stella".

L'ho guardata illuminare inutilmente la luce nel cielo

E nell'oscurità senza luna della mezzanotte

Le ho chiesto perché teneva ferma la luce, vicino al petto

«La mia casa è tutta buia e solitaria, prestami la tua luce.»

«Ne ho bisogno per tornare a casa a piedi» disse

«Non riesco a vedere al buio, come un gatto»

E ho visto perdersi tra gli alberi e nelle luci delle case
