As I was driving home along the boulevard late one night

I saw a guy in the corner, bumming all alone

As I passed him by, I heard him holler out: «Hey!»

I slowed down to see what he said, he said:

«Eh!

By any chance, are you goin' my way?»

I said: «sure baby, hop on in and give me a cigarette»

Then he reached out in his pocket

And that was the moment I regret

«Don't you try no monkey business, I got a stopper in my hand!»

An' then he said: «You see this rock I got in my hand?

This is a 38 pistol built on a 45 frame

It shoots tombstone bullets an' a ball and chain!»

He said: «I ain’t tryin' to shake you up, but I just want you to know

If the cops start to crowding me in

You’re gonna be the first to go!

You just drive on just like there ain’t nothin' happenin'»

That’s what he told me, he wouldn’t even let me look back at nothin'

And he said: «when you get to that red light

I want you to jump back your left and then switch back your right»

He said: «Now, I want you to park up in that alley

And cool it behind that liquor store

That’s what he told me

He said:"keep your foot on the gas

He made a mistake in the dark and ran and leaped in the police car!

When they put the handcuffs on him

I said: «Child, your crime must have outgrew him!»

An' then they said: «Yeh, we gonna put him so far back in jail this time

That they’re gonna have to pump air into him!"

Mentre una notte stavo tornando a casa lungo il viale

Ho visto un tizio nell'angolo, che si lamentava tutto solo

Passando davanti a lui, l'ho sentito gridare: «Ehi!»

Ho rallentato per vedere cosa ha detto, ha detto:

«Eh!

Per caso, stai andando per la mia strada?»

Ho detto: «certo piccola, sali e dammi una sigaretta»

Poi ha allungato la mano in tasca

E quello è stato il momento in cui mi sono pentito

Se i poliziotti iniziano a affollarmi dentro

Questo è quello che mi ha detto, non mi avrebbe nemmeno lasciato guardare indietro a nulla

E ha detto: «quando arrivi a quel semaforo rosso

Voglio che tu salti indietro alla tua sinistra e poi torni indietro alla tua destra»

Disse: «Ora voglio che parcheggiate in quel vicolo

E raffreddalo dietro quel negozio di liquori

E tieni sempre d'occhio

Mentre mi intrufolo in quella porta sul retro»

Questo è quello che mi ha detto

Ha detto: "tieni il piede sul gas

Perché quando vengo a correre fuori dal negozio di liquori con tutti quei soldi

Voleva che lo schiacciassi con forza

Disse: «Ora non esci di lì e provami un doppiogioco

Perché è un omicidio quando le manche si susseguono!»

Sì, ma non capisco, signore

Ooeee, mentre ero seduto lì e stavo tremando

Un riflettore mi ha colpito a morte in faccia

Un poliziotto si è fermato dietro di me e ha detto:

«Sali un po' uomo, perché noi vogliamo prendere il tuo posto!»

E poi questo ragazzo è uscito di corsa dal negozio con i soldi in mano

E disse: "Oh, eccoti!"

Ha fatto un errore nel buio ed è corso e saltato nell'auto della polizia!

Quando gli hanno messo le manette

Dissi: «Bambina, il tuo crimine deve averlo superato!»

E poi hanno detto: «Sì, lo rimettiamo così tanto in galera questa volta

Che dovranno pompargli aria dentro!"

Ebbene ora ragazzo «raggiungere il cielo»
