I had a dream last night I was cast into hell by a jealous God

The Devil walked up and said, «You don’t need no lightning rod

«It hardly ever rains down here, I can’t recall the last storm

«You ain’t gonna need that corduroy jacket 'cause it gets kinda warm

«There's one way in, there’s no way out;

it looks like you’re here to stay

«Oh, the place is a mess, it’s overcrowded, more are coming in everyday»

I said, «Aw man, wait a minute, there’s gotta be somethin' wrong

«I ain’t a bad guy, I just write these little songs

«I always paid my union dues, I don’t stay in the passing lane»

He said, «What about all that whiskey and cocaine?»

I said, «Well, yeah, but that’s no reason to throw a troubadour in hell

«I didn’t use the cocaine to get high, I just like the way it smelled»

He said, «Come on over here, son, let me show you around

«Over there’s where we put the preachers;

I never liked those clowns

«They're always blaming me for everything wrong under the sun

«It ain’t that much harder to do what’s right, it’s just maybe not as much fun

«Then they walk around thinkin' that they’re better than me and you

«When they get caught in a motel room doin' what they said not to do»

«Now the murderers and the rapists, they’re goin' in this fiery lake

«As well as most of the politicians and the cops on the take

«All the mothers who wait 'til they get to K-Mart to spank their kids

«Instead of showin' 'em how to do what’s right, they just hit them for what

they did

«And all the daddies who run off and abandon their daughters and sons

«Oh, anybody who hurts a child is gonna burn in the fiery waters»

«If everybody’s down here,» I said, «who's up in heaven with God and the Son?»

«Oh, some saints and mystics and students of Metaphysics 101

«People who care and share and love and try to do what’s right

«Beautiful old souls who read to their babies every night

«What you won’t find up in heaven are Christian Coalition right-wing

conservatives

«Country program directors, and Nashville record executives»

«Now,» I said, «I've made some mistakes, but I’m not as bad as those guys

«How can God do this to me?

Can’t he sympathize?»

He said, «You're wrong about God being cruel and mean

«Oh, God is the most loving thing that’s never been seen»

I said, «Hot Shot, tell me this: which religion is the truest?»

He said, «They're all about the same: Buddha was not a Christian,

but Jesus would’ve made a good Buddhist»

When I thought about my future, I didn’t seem to have much of one

I looked around to leave but there was no place to run

I said, «I don’t suppose I could go back and try livin' again

«You know, like reincarnation-I hear that’s the way it’s always been»

«I can’t answer that,» he said, «you're gonna have to wait for that response

«But it’s not any more unusual to be born twice than it is to be born once»

Well it looked like I was gonna be stuck here, as far as I could tell

I thought I might as well suck up;

you know, what the hell?

«You remember that song that Charlie Daniels did?

«About how you went down to Georgia and played the fiddle against that kid?»

He said, «Yeah, it broke my heart but, you know, what’re you gonna do?»

I said, «To tell you the truth, I thought your solo was the better of the two»

Well, then I woke up and I found that I was lyin' in my own bed

I ran upstairs and kissed my little daughter on her sleepin' head

I took this dream to be a sign from God, so I thought I’d better pray:

I said, «Don't ever speak to me directly, and thanks anyway»

Now so much has changed about me besides just givin' up red meat

Some get spiritual 'cause they see the light and some 'cause they feel the heat

«Mi incolpano sempre per tutto ciò che non va sotto il sole

«Non è molto più difficile fare ciò che è giusto, forse non è così divertente

«Poi vanno in giro pensando di essere migliori di me e di te

«Quando vengono sorpresi in una stanza di un motel a fare ciò che hanno detto di non fare»

«Ora gli assassini e gli stupratori stanno andando in questo lago infuocato

«Così come la maggior parte dei politici e dei poliziotti in fuga

«Tutte le madri che aspettano di arrivare al K-Mart per sculacciare i propri figli

«Invece di mostrare loro come fare ciò che è giusto, li colpiscono per cosa

«Persone che si prendono cura e condividono, amano e cercano di fare ciò che è giusto

«Ora», dissi, «ho fatto degli errori, ma non sono così cattivo come quei ragazzi

«Come può Dio farmi questo?

Non può simpatizzare?»

Disse: «Ti sbagli sul fatto che Dio sia crudele e meschino

Dissi: «Hot Shot, dimmi questo: quale religione è la più vera?»

Disse: «Sono quasi tutti uguali: Buddha non era cristiano,

ma Gesù sarebbe stato un buon buddista»

Quando pensavo al mio futuro, non mi sembrava di averne molto

Mi sono guardato intorno per andarmene ma non c'era posto dove scappare

Dissi: «Suppongo che non potrei tornare indietro e provare a vivere di nuovo

«Sai, come la reincarnazione, ho sentito dire che è sempre stato così»

«Non posso rispondere», disse, «dovrai aspettare quella risposta

«Ma non è più insolito nascere due volte che nascere una volta»

Beh, sembrava che sarei rimasto bloccato qui, per quanto ne potevo dire

Ho pensato che avrei potuto anche succhiare;

sai, che diavolo?

«Ricordi quella canzone che ha fatto Charlie Daniels?

«Di come sei sceso in Georgia e hai suonato il violino contro quel ragazzo?»

Disse: «Sì, mi ha spezzato il cuore ma, sai, cosa farai?»

Dissi: «A dire il vero, pensavo che il tuo assolo fosse il migliore dei due»

Bene, poi mi sono svegliato e ho scoperto che ero sdraiato nel mio letto

Corsi di sopra e baciai la mia piccola figlia sulla sua testa addormentata

Ho preso questo sogno per essere un segno di Dio, quindi ho pensato che avrei fatto meglio a pregare:

Dissi: «Non parlarmi mai direttamente, e grazie comunque»

Ora sono cambiate tante cose in me, oltre a rinunciare alla carne rossa

Alcuni diventano spirituali perché vedono la luce e altri perché sentono il calore
