Friend In A Bar - Tina Dico

I met a friend in a bar last night

A girl from a far away past

We counted and worked out that it’d been more than seven years

Since we saw each other last

She looked so much older I’d have to say

She used to dress so lovely and smart

And now her colours, they were faded and her hair was a mess

Her expression was tired and hard

I asked her what she had been up to since then

She hesitated a while

She drew a nervous breath and sighed «Not much to be honest»

Through a shame-faced smile

We sat there all night, side by side

The conversation was slow

A few times I got up and said «Okay well…»

But I could tell she didn’t want me to go

At three in the morning she suddenly said

«Truth is I’ve done nothing at all

My mind’s been much too busy thinking of a man

And waiting for him to call»

«He left me on the day that I turned 21

For years now I’ve been on my own

I’m scared that if I change or if I leave my house too long

I won’t be there when he decides to come home»

I asked about the man and her eyes lit up!

The taste of his name brought her right out of her shell

She said «It wasn’t always easy, he’s a complicated man

But I know he loves me and I know he meant well»

«He still calls now and then in the dead of my nights

He asks if I’m alone in bed

And I tell him 'Babe of course I am, I’m yours now and for ever,

PLEASE DON’T HANG UP…'

And then the line goes dead»

I got up on my feet and I ran out

Thinking «Please don’t let me catch the cruel disease she has!»

Ieri sera ho incontrato un amico in un bar

Una ragazza di un passato lontano

Abbiamo contato e calcolato che erano trascorsi più di sette anni

Da quando ci siamo visti l'ultima volta

Sembrava così molto più grande dovrei dire

Si vestiva in modo così adorabile e intelligente

E ora i suoi colori erano sbiaditi e i suoi capelli erano un pasticcio

La sua espressione era stanca e dura

Le ho chiesto cosa aveva combinato da allora

Esitò per un po'

Trasse un respiro nervoso e sospirò «Non molto per essere onesti»

Attraverso un sorriso di vergogna

Siamo stati lì tutta la notte, fianco a fianco

La conversazione era lenta

Qualche volta mi sono alzato e ho detto «Va bene...»

Ma potrei dire che non voleva che andassi

Alle tre del mattino disse improvvisamente

«La verità è che non ho fatto nulla

La mia mente è stata troppo occupata a pensare a un uomo

E in attesa che lui chiama»

«Mi ha lasciato il giorno in cui ho compiuto 21 anni

Ormai da anni sono da solo

Ho paura che se cambio o esco di casa troppo a lungo

Non ci sarò quando lui deciderà di tornare a casa»

Ho chiesto dell'uomo e i suoi occhi si sono illuminati!

Il sapore del suo nome l'ha fatta uscire dal suo guscio

Ha detto «Non è stato sempre facile, è un uomo complicato

Ma so che mi ama e so che intendeva bene»

«Mi chiama ancora ogni tanto nel cuore delle mie notti

Mi chiede se sono solo a letto

E gli dico 'Bambina certo che lo sono, sono tuo ora e per sempre,

PER FAVORE, NON RIATTACCARE...'

E poi la linea si interrompe»

Mi sono alzato in piedi e sono corso fuori
