A virgin unspotted, the prophet foretold,

Should bring forth a Saviour, which now we behold,

To be our Redeemer from death, hell and sin,

Which Adam’s transgression entangled us in.

Now let us be merry, put sorrow away:

Our Saviour, Christ Jesus, was born on this day.

At Bethlehem city in Jewry, we know,

That Joseph and Mary together did go,

And there to be tallied with many they came,

Since Caesar Augustus commanded the same.

But when they had entered the city so fair,

A number of people so mighty was there,

That Joseph and Mary, whose substance was small,

Could find in the inn there no lodging at all.

Then they were constrained in a stable to lie,

Where horses and asses they used for to tie:

Their lodging so simple they took it no scorn,

Before the next morning our Saviour was born.

The King of all kings to this world having come,

They sought out fine linen to wrap Him in some,

And when she had swaddled her young Son so sweet,

Within an ox manger, she laid Him to sleep.

Then God sent an angel from Heaven so high,

To certain poor shepherds in fields where they lie,

And bade them no longer in darkness to stay,

Because that a Saviour was born on this day.

Then presently after the shepherds did spy

Vast numbers of angels that covered the sky;

They joyfully cried out and sweetly did sing,

To God be all glory, our heavenly King.

To teach us humility all this was done;

We learn haughty pride and resentment to shun:

A manger His cradle who came from above,

The great God of mercy, of peace, and of love.

Una vergine immacolata, predisse il profeta,

Dovrebbe produrre un Salvatore, che ora vediamo,

Per essere il nostro Redentore dalla morte, dall'inferno e dal peccato,

In cui la trasgressione di Adamo ci ha impigliato.

Ora siamo allegri, mettiamo da parte il dolore:

Il nostro Salvatore, Cristo Gesù, è nato in questo giorno.

Nella città di Betlemme, nell'ebraismo, sappiamo che

Che Giuseppe e Maria insieme sono andati,

E là vennero per essere confrontati con molti,

Dal momento che Cesare Augusto ha comandato lo stesso.

Ma quando furono entrati in città così bella,

C'era un certo numero di persone così potenti,

Che Giuseppe e Maria, la cui sostanza era piccola,

Nella locanda non ho trovato alcun alloggio.

Poi furono costretti in una stalla a mentire,

Dove erano soliti legare cavalli e asini:

Il loro alloggio è così semplice che non lo prendevano senza disprezzo,

Prima del mattino seguente nasceva il nostro Salvatore.

Il Re di tutti i re di questo mondo essendo venuto,

Cercarono lino finissimo per avvolgerlo in alcuni,

E quando ebbe fasciato il suo giovane Figlio così dolce,

All'interno di una mangiatoia per buoi, lo fece dormire.

Allora Dio mandò un angelo dal Cielo così alto,

Ad alcuni poveri pastori nei campi dove giacciono,

E ordinò loro di non restare più nelle tenebre,

Perché un Salvatore è nato in questo giorno.

Poi subito dopo i pastori fecero la spia

Un gran numero di angeli che coprivano il cielo;

Gridavano con gioia e cantavano dolcemente,

A Dio sia tutta gloria, nostro Re celeste.

Per insegnarci l'umiltà tutto questo è stato fatto;

Impariamo l'orgoglio superbo e il risentimento a evitare:

Una mangiatoia sua culla che veniva dall'alto,

Il grande Dio della misericordia, della pace e dell'amore.
