Twisting and turning beside the slumbering Tereza,

he recalled something she had told him a long time

before in the course of an insignificant conversation.

They had been talking about his friend Z, when she announced,

'If I hadn’t met you, I’d certainly have fallen in

love with him.'

Even then,

her words had left Tomas in a strange state of melancholy,

and now he realized it was only a matter of chance that

Tereza loved him and not his friend Z.

Apart from her consummated love for Tomas,

there were, in the realm of possibility, an infinite number of

unconsummated loves for other men.

We all reject out of hand the idea that the love of our life

may be something light or weightless;

we presume our love

is what must be,

that without it our life would no longer be the same;

we feel Beethoven himself, gloomy and awe-inspiring,

is playing to our own great

love.

Torcendo e girando accanto alla sonnacchiosa Tereza,

ha ricordato qualcosa che gli aveva detto molto tempo

prima nel corso di una conversazione insignificante.

Stavano parlando della sua amica Z, quando ha annunciato,

"Se non ti avessi incontrato, ci sarei sicuramente caduto

amore con lui.'

Anche allora,

le sue parole avevano lasciato Tomas in uno strano stato di malinconia,

e ora si è reso conto che era solo una questione di casualità

Tereza amava lui e non il suo amico Z.

A parte il suo consumato amore per Tomas,

ce n'erano, nel regno delle possibilità, un numero infinito di

amori non consumati per gli altri uomini.

Rifiutiamo tutti a priori l'idea che l'amore della nostra vita

può essere qualcosa di leggero o senza peso;

presupponiamo il nostro amore

è ciò che deve essere,

che senza di essa la nostra vita non sarebbe più la stessa;

ci sentiamo Beethoven stesso, cupo e maestoso,

sta suonando alla grande

amore.
