The Frog & The Princess - Grace Jones

The first night watching her in Le Mouche, I had already decided to work with

her.

That night, she was singing her hit song «I Need a Man"to a room full of

shrieking gay bobbysockses.

The ambiguity of her act was that she herself looked like a man — a man,

singing «I Need a Man"to a bunch of men.

I could see how the average guy could get a little scared by her physical

advance.

It was so powerful.

I thought she was… I thought she was great.

I photographed her in different positions.

I cut her legs apart, lengthened them, turned her body to face the audience.

Soon, I found myself living to the very fast rhythm of Grace Jones.

We would go out dancing, all night, every night.

I was completely neglecting my work.

An intense, hysterical romance developed between Grace and I.

But I ran out of money and realized I had to stop all this bullshit and go back

to work.

I had this idea of using Grace as the ideal veichle for my work.

She had inspired me.

On tour, we used to improvise.

Thinking of an idea at breakfast and working it

out directly on stage.

I decided, deliberately, to mythologize Grace Jones.

Black, shiny, muscular people.

ahh, aerodynamic in design.

'Twas to emphasise this belief that I painted Grace Jones blue/black.

I am no longer sure what I fell in love with;

Grace or my idea of what Grace

should be.

But in the two years following the birth of our son, there were nothing else in

my life.

Grace let me take her over completely.

But then I discovered that what I was making was speeding too far beyond what

was there.

By the time our 'One Man Show' reached the US, I knew I’d lost her.

Oh, the action.

La prima sera che l'ho vista in Le Mouche, avevo già deciso di lavorare con lei

sua.

Quella notte, stava cantando la sua canzone di successo "I Need a Man" in una stanza piena di

calzini gay urlanti.

L'ambiguità del suo gesto era che lei stessa sembrava un uomo, un uomo,

cantando «Ho bisogno di un uomo» a un gruppo di uomini.

Potevo vedere come il ragazzo medio potesse essere un po' spaventato dal suo fisico

avanzare.

Era così potente.

Pensavo che fosse... pensavo che fosse fantastica.

L'ho fotografata in diverse posizioni.

Le ho tagliato le gambe, le ho allungate, ho girato il suo corpo per affrontare il pubblico.

Presto mi sono ritrovato a vivere al ritmo velocissimo di Grace Jones.

Uscivamo a ballare, tutta la notte, tutte le sere.

Stavo trascurando completamente il mio lavoro.

Tra me e Grace si sviluppò un'intensa storia d'amore isterica.

Ma ho finito i soldi e ho capito che dovevo fermare tutte queste stronzate e tornare indietro

lavorare.

Ho avuto questa idea di usare Grace come veicolo ideale per il mio lavoro.

Lei mi aveva ispirato.

In tour, improvvisavamo.

Pensare a un'idea a colazione e metterla in pratica

direttamente sul palco.

Ho deciso, deliberatamente, di mitizzare Grace Jones.

Persone nere, lucide, muscolose.

ahh, aerodinamico nel design.

"Volevo sottolineare questa convinzione che ho dipinto Grace Jones blu/nero.

Non sono più sicuro di cosa mi sono innamorato;

Grace o la mia idea di cosa Grace

dovrebbe essere.

Ma nei due anni successivi alla nascita di nostro figlio non c'era nient'altro

la mia vita.

Grace mi ha lasciato prenderla completamente in consegna.

Ma poi ho scoperto che quello che stavo facendo era andare troppo oltre cosa

era li.

Quando il nostro "One Man Show" ha raggiunto gli Stati Uniti, ho saputo di averla persa.

Oh, l'azione.
