I dreamt once, that even though we’re not related, and even though I’m a boy

and you’re a girl, I dreamt once that we were Siamese twins.

We spent most of our days brushing each other’s hair and playing scrabble.

It was lovely.

And then one day a doctor told us he could change our lives forever.

Filled our heads with ideas like privacy.

So we said yes, because we considered ourselves adventurous types.

So they wheeled us into the operating room and put us under.

And then I had a dream within a dream.

I dreamt that I was running, swiftly and with a grace I have never known,

ducking and rolling to avoid sharp branches.

I took lessons from Jesus Christ lizards and learned to step lightly on water.

Then ran across oceans, stopping to catch my breath on the backs of whales that

came up for air.

I ran so fast and so far.

I felt like a lawman trying to capture the escaped convict of my own breath.

Later, I woke and discovered that we had been placed on opposite ends of the

recovery room.

You were sitting up in your bed crying.

So I asked you, «what's wrong?»

and you asked me, «why did you run away?

«so I limped towards you, climbed inside your bed, ran my hand through your

hair and told you, «I didn’t».

I was running to find you.

Una volta ho sognato che anche se non siamo imparentati e anche se sono un ragazzo

e tu sei una ragazza, una volta ho sognato che eravamo gemelli siamesi.

Passavamo la maggior parte delle nostre giornate spazzolandoci i capelli a vicenda e giocando a scarabeo.

È stato carino.

E poi un giorno un dottore ci disse che poteva cambiare le nostre vite per sempre.

Ci ha riempito la testa di idee come la privacy.

Quindi abbiamo detto di sì, perché ci consideravamo dei tipi avventurosi.

Così ci hanno portato in sala operatoria e ci hanno messo sotto.

E poi ho fatto un sogno all'interno di un sogno.

Ho sognato che stavo correndo, veloce e con una grazia che non avevo mai conosciuto,

abbassandoti e rotolando per evitare rami appuntiti.

Ho preso lezioni dalle lucertole di Gesù Cristo e ho imparato a calpestare l'acqua con leggerezza.

Poi ho attraversato gli oceani, fermandomi a riprendere fiato sul dorso delle balene

venuto su per prendere aria.

Ho corso così veloce e così lontano.

Mi mi sentivo come un avvocato che cercava di catturare il detenuto evaso di mio respiro.

Più tardi, mi svegliai e scoprii che eravamo stati collocati alle estremità opposte del

sala di recupero.

Eri seduto sul letto a piangere.

Quindi ti ho chiesto, "cosa c'è che non va?"

e tu mi hai chiesto: «perché sei scappato?

«così io zoppicavo verso di te, mi arrampicavo nel tuo letto, passavo la mia mano nel tuo

capelli e ti ho detto: «Io non l'ho fatto».

Stavo correndo per trovarti.
