Meaning from Experience - Akira the Don, David Foster Wallace

Here’s another didactic little story

There are these two guys sitting together in a bar in the remote Alaskan

wilderness

One of the guys is religious

The other is an atheist

And the two are arguing about the existence of God with that special intensity

that comes after about the fourth beer

And the atheist says

Look, it’s not like I don’t have actual reasons for not believing in God

It’s not like I haven’t ever experimented with the whole God and prayer thing

Just last month I got caught away from the camp in that terrible blizzard

And I was totally lost and I couldn’t see a thing

And it was 50 below

And so I tried it

I fell to my knees in the snow and cried out

‘Oh, God, if there is a God'

‘I'm lost in this blizzard, and I’m gonna die if you don’t help me'

And now, in the bar

The religious guy looks at the atheist all puzzled

‘Well then you must believe now' he says

‘After all'

‘Here you are'

‘Alive'

The atheist just rolls his eyes

‘No, man, all that was was a couple Eskimos happened to come wandering by and

showed me the way back to camp.'

It’s easy to run this story through kind of a standard liberal arts analysis

The exact same experience can mean two totally different things to two

different people

Given those people’s two different belief templates

And two different ways of constructing meaning from experience

Because we prize tolerance and diversity of belief

Nowhere in our liberal arts analysis do we want to claim that one guy’s

interpretation is true

And the other guy’s is false or bad

Which is fine

Except we also never end up talking about just where these individual templates

and beliefs come from

Meaning, where they come from INSIDE the two guys

As if a person’s most basic orientation toward the world

And the meaning of his experience were somehow just hard-wired

Like height or shoe-size

Or automatically absorbed from the culture, like language

As if how we construct meaning were not actually a matter of

Personal

Intentional

Choice

Plus, there’s the whole matter of arrogance

The nonreligious guy is so totally certain

In his dismissal of the possibility that the passing Eskimos had anything to do

with his prayer for help

True

There are plenty of religious people who seem arrogant and certain of their own

interpretations, too They’re probably even more repulsive than atheists

At least to most of us

But religious dogmatists' problem is exactly the same as the story’s unbeliever

Blind certainty

A close-mindedness that amounts to an imprisonment so total that the prisoner

doesn’t even know he’s locked up

The point here

Is that I think this is one part

Of what

Teaching me how to think

Is really supposed to mean

To be just a little less arrogant

To have just a little

Critical awareness about myself and my certainties

Because a huge percentage

Of stuff that I tend to be automatically certain of is, it turns out

Totally wrong

And deluded

I have learned this the hard way

As I predict you graduates will, too

Ecco un'altra piccola storia didattica

Ci sono questi due ragazzi seduti insieme in un bar nel remoto Alaskan

natura selvaggia

Uno dei ragazzi è religioso

L'altro è un ateo

E i due stanno discutendo dell'esistenza di Dio con quella speciale intensità

che viene dopo circa la quarta birra

E l'ateo dice

Ascolta, non è che non abbia ragioni reali per non credere in Dio

Non è che non avessi mai sperimentato l'intera faccenda di Dio e della preghiera

Proprio il mese scorso sono stato catturato dal campo in quella terribile bufera di neve

Ed ero completamente perso e non riuscivo a vedere nulla

Ed era 50 sotto

E così l'ho provato

Sono caduto in ginocchio nella neve e ho gridato

'Oh, Dio, se c'è un Dio'

"Sono perso in questa bufera di neve e morirò se non mi aiuti"

E ora, al bar

Il religioso guarda l'ateo tutto perplesso

"Beh, allora devi credere ora", dice

'Dopotutto'

'Ecco'

'Vivo'

L'ateo alza gli occhi al cielo

'No, amico, tutto ciò che era era una coppia di eschimesi capitata di passare vagando e

mi ha mostrato la via del campo.'

È facile condurre questa storia attraverso una sorta di analisi standard delle arti liberali

La stessa identica esperienza può significare due cose completamente diverse da due

persone diverse

Dati i due diversi modelli di credenze di quelle persone

E due modi diversi di costruire il significato dall'esperienza

Perché apprezziamo la tolleranza e la diversità di credenze

Da nessuna parte nella nostra analisi sulle arti liberali vogliamo affermare che un ragazzo

l'interpretazione è vera

E quello dell'altro ragazzo è falso o cattivo

Che va bene

Solo che non finiamo mai per parlare di dove questi singoli modelli

e le credenze vengono da

Cioè, da dove vengono DENTRO i due ragazzi

Come se fosse l'orientamento più elementare di una persona verso il mondo

E il significato della sua esperienza era in qualche modo solo cablato

Come l'altezza o la taglia della scarpa

O automaticamente assorbito dalla cultura, come la lingua

Come se il modo in cui costruiamo il significato non fosse in realtà una questione di

Personale

Intenzionale

Scelta

Inoltre, c'è tutta la questione dell'arroganza

Il ragazzo non religioso è così totalmente certo

Nel suo licenziamento della possibilità che gli eschimesi di passaggio avessero qualcosa da fare

con la sua preghiera di aiuto

Vero

Ci sono molte persone religiose che sembrano arroganti e certe di loro stesse

anche le interpretazioni Sono probabilmente anche più ripugnanti degli atei

Almeno per la maggior parte di noi

Ma il problema dei dogmatici religiosi è esattamente lo stesso del non credente della storia

Cieca certezza

Una chiusura mentale che equivale a una reclusione così totale che il prigioniero

non sa nemmeno di essere rinchiuso

Il punto qui

È che penso che questa sia una parte

Di cosa

Insegnandomi a pensare

Dovrebbe davvero significare

Per essere solo un po' meno arrogante

Per averne un po'

Consapevolezza critica su me stesso e sulle mie certezze

Perché un'enorme percentuale

Di le cose di cui tendo a essere automaticamente certo è, risulta

Totalmente sbagliato

E illuso

L'ho imparato a mie spese

Come prevedo, lo faranno anche i laureati
