I wore my ragged coat so bare

The tattered sleeves were thin as paper

And so I took it to a tailor

And asked him kindly for repair

I made a joke, and said

«This coat requires total restoration

To bring me glory and salvation

I need your skillful hands to sew!»

But then my playful little words

Took on a meaning unintended

As he methodically mended

He seemed disturbed

Peculiar bird…

And I observed the silent way he worked

To rectify the garment

As though my soul depended on it

This ragged coat, for all my days

He thought I’d slip into the sleeve

And I’d believe again so clearly

That somehow you could love sincerely

But that’s absurd

Indossavo il mio cappotto stracciato così nudo

Le maniche sbrindellate erano sottili come carta

E così l'ho portato da un sarto

E gli chiese gentilmente la riparazione

Ho fatto una battuta e l'ho detto

«Questo cappotto necessita di un restauro totale

Per portarmi gloria e salvezza

Ho bisogno delle tue abili mani per cucire!»

Ma poi le mie paroline giocose

Ha assunto un significato non intenzionale

Come ha riparato metodicamente

Sembrava disturbato

E ho osservato il modo silenzioso in cui lavorava

Per rettificare l'indumento

Come se la mia anima dipendesse da questo

Questo cappotto lacero, per tutti i miei giorni

Pensava che sarei scivolato nella manica

E ci crederei di nuovo così chiaramente

Che in qualche modo potresti amare sinceramente

Ma è assurdo
