That cloudless night by the waning light of a tired moon

The poet stole across the town

(Sleeping, always sleeping

And dreaming, never dreaming)

A shadow and a shade

A ghost that just was made

Creeping across the common, past the bridge and past the fountain

He pushed his wheelbarrow forward through the gloom

And rested by the river where

He could see the stone

The shape of it alone

Made him grasp his heart

An artist when his art

Stares back at him, a fount of living inspiration

The stone, he brought it home beneath the secrecy of night

The thief cometh like the Lord

Into his house where it was stored

He crept into the dreams of the townspeople

Like a knife into a vein

Or a rope around a throat

Quella notte senza nuvole alla luce calante di una luna stanca

Il poeta ha rubato attraverso la città

(Dormire, dormire sempre

E sognando, mai sognando)

Un'ombra e un'ombra

Un fantasma appena creato

Strisciando attraverso il comune, oltre il ponte e oltre la fontana

Spinse la sua carriola in avanti nell'oscurità

E riposato vicino al fiume dove

Poteva vedere la pietra

La forma di esso da solo

Gli ha fatto afferrare il cuore

Un artista quando la sua arte

Lo fissa di rimando, fonte di ispirazione vivente

La pietra, l'ha portata a casa sotto il segreto della notte

Il ladro viene come il Signore

Nella sua casa dove è stato conservato

Si è insinuato nei sogni dei cittadini

Come un coltello in una vena

O una corda intorno alla gola
