Where are all the joys of yesterday?

Where, now, is the happiness and laughter that we shared?

Gone, like our childhood dreams, aspirations and beliefs;

Time is a thief, and he ravages our gardens

Stripping saplings, felling trees

Trampling on our flowers, sucking sap and drying seeds

In the midnight candle-light of experience

All colour fades, green fingers grey

Time, alone, shall murder all the flowers

Still, there’s time to share our plots and all that we call 'ours'

How much worse, then, if we all deny each others' needs

And keep our gardens privately?

Its getting colder, wind and rain leave gashes;

Looking back, I only see the friends I’ve lost

Fires smoulder, raking through the ashes

My hands are dirty, my mind is numb

I count the cost of 'I':

«I need to get on, I’ve got to tend my garden;

Got to shut you out, no time to crave your pardon now»

Now I see the garden that I’ve grown is

Just the same as those outside;

The fences that, erected to protect, simply divide…

There’s ruination everywhere

The weather has played havoc with the grass…

Does anyone believe his garden’s really going to last?

In the time allotted us, can any man keep miserly his own?

Is there any pleasure in a solitary growth?

Come and see my garden if you will

I’d like someone to see it all before each root is killed

Surely now its time to open up each life to all

Tear down the walls, if it’s not too late!

There is so much sorrow in the world

There is so much emptiness and heartbreak and pain

Somewhere on the road we have all taken a wrong turn…

How can we build the right path again?

Through the grief, through the pain

Our flowers need each other’s rain…

Dove sono tutte le gioie di ieri?

Dov'è, ora, la felicità e le risate che abbiamo condiviso?

Andato, come i nostri sogni d'infanzia, aspirazioni e credenze;

Il tempo è un ladro e devasta i nostri giardini

Spogliare alberelli, abbattere alberi

Calpestare i nostri fiori, succhiare la linfa e far essiccare i semi

Alla mezzanotte a lume di candela dell'esperienza

Tutti i colori svaniscono, le dita verdi grigie

Il tempo, da solo, ucciderà tutti i fiori

Tuttavia, c'è tempo per condividere le nostre trame e tutto ciò che chiamiamo "nostro"

Quanto peggio, allora, se tutti neghiamo i bisogni gli uni degli altri

E mantenere i nostri giardini privati?

Sta diventando più freddo, vento e pioggia lasciano squarci;

Guardando indietro, vedo solo gli amici che ho perso

I fuochi covano sotto la cenere, rastrellando tra le ceneri

Le mie mani sono sporche, la mia mente è insensibile

Conto il costo di 'Io':

«Ho bisogno di salire, devo curare il mio giardino;

Devo escluderti, non c'è tempo per chiedere il tuo perdono ora»

Ora vedo che il giardino che ho coltivato è

Proprio come quelli fuori;

Le recinzioni che, erette per proteggere, semplicemente dividono...

C'è rovina ovunque

Il tempo ha devastato l'erba...

Qualcuno crede che il suo giardino durerà davvero?

Nel tempo che ci è stato assegnato, può un uomo mantenere il suo avaro?

C'è del piacere in una crescita solitaria?

Vieni a vedere il mio giardino, se vuoi

Vorrei che qualcuno veda tutto prima che ogni radice venga uccisa

Sicuramente ora è il momento di aprire ogni vita a tutti

Abbatti i muri, se non è troppo tardi!

C'è così tanto dolore nel mondo

C'è così tanto vuoto, crepacuore e dolore

Da qualche parte sulla strada abbiamo tutti preso una svolta sbagliata...

Come possiamo ricostruire di nuovo la strada giusta?

Attraverso il dolore, attraverso il dolore

I nostri fiori hanno bisogno l'uno della pioggia dell'altro...
