Look at the candle, as it’s life is bought,

as the wick just rolls of and dies;

look at the wax-drops as they cease from their goal

and the game they were playing loses its joy

and the youth which they played in runs away…

How long will you be gone?

Flames sucks at air now and its breath comes short

as it wavers to half its size;

vacuum closes in and it attacks the soul.

Now the force omnipotent itself is destroyed

and for lack of itself it wanes away…

So does my mind fly as I fight my thought —

and I lose, for I cannot find:

sent my eyes long miles, they do not know home!

For the life I was part of breathes its last

and not only life, but hope has gone away…

Guarda la candela, come la vita è stata comprata,

come lo stoppino rotola e muore;

guarda le gocce di cera mentre cessano di raggiungere il loro obiettivo

e il gioco a cui stavano giocando perde la sua gioia

e la giovinezza in cui hanno giocato fugge...

Per quanto tempo starai via?

Le fiamme risucchiano l'aria ora e il suo respiro si fa corto

mentre vacilla a metà delle sue dimensioni;

il vuoto si chiude e attacca l'anima.

Ora la stessa forza onnipotente è distrutta

e per mancanza di sé svanisce...

Così la mia mente vola mentre combatto il mio pensiero —

e perdo, perché non riesco a trovare:

inviato ai miei occhi lunghi chilometri, non sanno casa!

Perché la vita di cui ho fatto parte respira l'ultima

e non solo la vita, ma la speranza è andata via...
